Summer flowers for the tea ceremony! “Like they are in the field naturally.”

Flower for  Japanese tea ceremony

Cha-bana; flowers for the tea ceremony is different from the flower arrangement called Ikebana.

We don’t use western flowers for the tea room, but natural flowers growing in the field are mainly used.

However, it’s almost impossible to find natural flowers near my house in Kyoto city since it is urbanized with new buildings and asphalt loads.

We tea masters usually buy them in the flower shop, or grow them in the garden of our houses.

shakuyaku for tea ceremony Kyoto

This is one of the instruction from the founder of Wabi-cha tea ceremony, Senno Rikyu.

I always feel it’s a little difficult to display flowers on the alcove of a tea room although I have the license of Japanese flower arrangement Misho-ryu.

If it’s Ikebana (especially new style), we also use western flowers and decollate a lot by using the lines of stalks, the surface of flowers and leaves etc.

However, we have to put Japanese flowers like they are in the filed for the tea ceremony. Seeing carefully which angle is the most natural and beautiful, choose the best flowers and sometimes remove flowers or leaves if it’s too many.

hydrangea

Japanese rose of Sharon for tea ceremony

Maybe it is Japanese rose of Sharon the most often used in July and August.

It’s same kind as hibiscus. This white and red bottom is called So-tan Mukuge in Japanese. So-tan is the name of the 3rd grand tea master of Urasenke (1578-1658).  It’s said that he loved this white and red Mukuge.

They start flowering quite early in summer. There are too many So-tan Mukuge flowers in my house now. Maybe it will end blooming in the middle of August.

Japanese silver grass for tea ceremony

These are the leaves of Japanese silver grass with the white pattern of “nock of an arrow”. We use leaves in summer and ears in the autumn.

Varieties of flower baskets for tea ceremony

flower basket made of bamboo

The photo is the shop of bamboo craft owned by Mr.Yokoyama in Kyoto since we don’t have so many varieties in our tea house now.

A flower basket with a long slender neck, the shape of umbrella, and cicala..

Flowers are the only the living utensil in a tea room.

Although we tend to be attracted by tea bowls or tea whisk at the first time, flowers and the vase on the alcove is also important item which represents Japanese season.
