Kyoto Opal experience ~the handmade jewelry~

Kyoto Opal experience ~the handmade jewelry~

Kyoto offers many local experiences such as tea ceremony, kimono, Ninjya, and Samurai in English.

I’ve heard Japanese home cooking experience is also popular in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo.

By the way, I’d like to introduce the new experience in Kyoto today. It’s “Handmade Kyoto jewelry” experience.

Kyoto Opal

What’s “Kyoto Opal”?

It’s the original particles developed by Kyocera company. They have made this original opal by researching the quartz which is same particle of the natural Opal.

It’s difficult to see on this pictures, but it shines gracefully.

It looked difficult to make by ourselves, but it was just 30 minutes to complete it!

I tried making it at Hobbix in Horikawa Nakadachiuri Kyoto.

We prepare Japanese paper, metal fittings, and resin solution.

1、At first, die-cut Japanese paper for the metal. This one is the shape of Japanese fan.

2、Put the Japanese paper on the metal again, and adjust the size to fit snugly into the metal.

3、Paste the paper on the metal by the resin solution.

5、Since it sets in few minutes after exposing to the UV light, we can coat any times.

6、Fit the resin solution to the every nook and corners by using toothpicks.

7、Sprinkle the pinch of Kyoto Opal powders, and expose it to the light again.

This is actually “Obidome”,an accessory passed through ‘Obijime'(a string tied around the waist to fix obi), but we can change its metal to the brooch also.

The new method of use for Kyoto Opal

Kyoto Opal

Hobbix offers the pretty Goshuin-cho book like this.

Even though it’s Obidome, we can use this as an accessory for notebooks or Goshuin-cho books.

It might be the pretty accent for your secret diaries or precious notebooks.

Actually, it’s “Netsuke” which had been used for wearing a purse, poach for medicine, or cigarettes in Samurai period. They had been the useful strings & the latch to fasten the small bags when we wear kimono for the daily life. But now, we can use them for key holders or accessories like this.

key holders

They must be the memorial Kyoto accessories for you.
