The rare moister Castella made by “Zenka Sho-in” in Kyoto

Zenka Sho-in is the beautiful Japanese house with a large garden and a traditional ware house. It is a special café for Castella as well as the gallery & shop for Japanese sweets.

The special Castella is called “Zen”, which is very moist compared to other ordinal sponge cakes.

The traditional Japanese house of 300 years old

Zenka Sho-in

It’s in the east area of Nijo- castle in Kyoto, where we have many traditional sweets shops, kimono shops, and old houses. Walking the path, I have found a large Japanese wooden house with a beautiful garden.

Japanese garden

A one-man exhibition of the leaf green tea potteries was held in the day. A woman artist wearing kimono was showing her beautiful tea sets. Walking to the garden, the ware house was used for the “Kyoto Graphie”, the photo event held everywhere in Kyoto now.

Although Zenka Sho-in is the new shop since 2009, It was the artistic place!

The original Castella in Kyoto

Castella

The inside of the Castella was very moist like souffle cheese cake. The special eggs born by chickens eating expensive beans made in Tanba area are used for this. It’s not baked on purpose, not by the accident. I could feel the special yolk were used for this Castella.

The café was modern but mixed with the traditional architecture.

tea kitchen

I liked the original tea ceremony set on the table. If I could build my houose, I would like to make such a tea kitchen since I love matcha.

Their matcha was not so thick, not bitter. It was great Usu-cha (light tea).

I recommend you to try the salty kelp with Japanese pepper put beside the Castella for removing the sweet taste, too. We sometimes have opposite taste to enjoy the sweets more.

The castella and cookies limited in the season

Display for Aoi festival

They are selling the matcha cookies, and cake with the branding of Aoi festival in May 15th and so on. Aoi festival is one of the 3 biggest festivals in Kyoto which has been held since Heian period (794-1192). Because It’s reasonable and the packages are also nice, I think they’ll be the great souvenir to bring back to your countries.

I’ve found some customers from East Japan in the café today. Of course, we can enjoy here alone, but I think it’s a great place for the couple since it’s luxurious and peaceful atmosphere if you don’t have the allergy for eggs.
